PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control a program flow inside a data processing system. SOLUTION: A data processing apparatus includes a data engine 6 having an instruction decoder 18 for generating one or more control signals 24 to control a processing circuit 20 to perform data processing operation designated by a decoded program instruction. The instruction decoder 18 reads a programmable flow control value from a flow control register 38 in response to a marker instruction. The programmable flow control value designates an action to be taken at completion of execution of a present program instruction string. The action to be taken can be an action to jump to a target program instruction at the beginning of a target program instruction string, or can be an action to come into an idle state of waiting that a new processing task is started.
