PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To observe an image with less sense of incompatibility by making a video see-through type HMD compact and lightweight. SOLUTION: The imaging display device has an optical system that guides light from a display element 1 to an exit pupil 3 and also guides light from outside to an image sensor 2. The optical system includes an optical element 10 filled with a medium formed such that the refractive indexes of areas inside at least three optical faces are greater than 1. The optical element has: a half-mirror face serving as a first face 7 located on the outside, among the at least three optical faces; and a diffraction element portion 13 on the outside of the first face. The optical system guides light from the display element to the exit pupil 3 through reflection off the second face 5, which is the closest to the exit pupil among the at least the three optical faces, reflection off the first face, and transmission through the second face. Further, the optical system diffracts light from outside by means of the diffractive element portion, transmits this light through the first face, and makes it incident on an optical element. Then, the optical system reflects this light off the second face, transmits the light through the third face 5, and guides it to the image sensor. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
