A device management system that can easily manage devices on a network existing beyond a router. In the device management system, firstly, a management device (3) transmits a packet to a probe device (5b) beyond a router (2a). Then, the probe device (5b) broadcasts onto a network (1b). Then, the device on the network (1b) transmits, by return, a reply-packet to the probe device (5b). Then, the probe device (5b) determines whether the reply-packet is one received from the device that is to be managed, and transmits to the management device (3) only the reply packet received from the device that is to be managed.
