PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing β-type phthalocyanine (β-Pc) easily under moderate conditions while reducing environmental load than in the past. SOLUTION: The process includes dissolving a specific phthalocyanine complex which may have halogen as a substituent and in which a center metal thereof is selected from copper, nickel, iron, titanyl, zinc, vanadyl, lithium and gallium in a solvent represented by formula (2) (wherein R represents a 8-18C, preferably 12-14C alkyl group, X represents H or an alkali metal), mixing the resulting solution with a solvent having a lower phthalocyanine complex solubility than the solvent to deposit crystals of a β-Pc complex to obtain β-Pc.
