PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inhibitor of natural immune response which is activated by a nucleic acid and a screening method. SOLUTION: The inhibitor of natural immune response which is activated by a nucleic acid includes a compound selected from the group consisting of a base-free phosphorothioate deoxyribose homopolymer or derivatives thereof. The screening method includes a step of leaving solid-phased HMGB protein in the presence or absence of a material to be tested; a step of bringing the HMGB protein into contact with a labeled nucleic-acid; a step of determining the quantity of the labeled nucleic-acid bonded to the HMGB protein; and a deciding step of deciding, when the quantity of the labeled nucleic-acid bonded to the HMGB protein left in the presence of the material to be tested is less than the quantity of the labeled nucleic-acid bonded to the HMGB protein left in the absence of the material to be tested, that the material to be tested is an inhibitor of natural immune response which is activated by nucleic acid, and deciding, when the former quantity is greater than the latter quantity, that the material to be tested is a promoter of natural immune response which is activated by a nucleic acid.
