A process for the manufacture of 2.5-dichloro alkali metal phenolates comprises reacting hexachloro cyclohexane in the presence of methanol under pressure with an alkali metal hydroxide at a temperature between 160 DEG C. and 180 DEG C. The alkali metal hydroxide, which may be sodium or potassium hydroxide, should be present in such quantity that its molecular ratio to that of the hexachloro cyclohexane is at least 5 to 1, and is preferably 7 to 8 mols. of hydroxide per mol. of hexachloro cyclohexane. The hexachloro cyclohexane may be an isomeric mixture from which most of the g isomer has been removed. The product may be converted to 2.5-dichloro phenol by treatment with sulphuric acid. Examples of the process are given.
