Manufacture of a conical filter element involves attaching a one-piece pre-formed sieve screen (22) over a wire wound conical filter, precise removal of excess screen length, and attachment of end-mountings (26). The screen is preferably welded stainless steel. The end-mounting connections (26) may be secured either by welding to the support rods (12) or press fitted to the trimmed screen.
