Disclosed is a backrest for a chair wherein both side sections of the lower section of an upholstering material are reduced in tendency thereof to slide with respect to side frames in order to prevent occurrence of slacking etc. of the upholstering material due to riding up and to prevent the front surface section of the upholstering material from excessively bending backward, thereby comfortably supporting the vicinity of the waist of a seated person. For these purposes, high friction members (30, 30) capable of increasing sliding resistance at the section where the upholstering material (26) and right and left side frames (18, 18) are in contact with each other are provided on the inner surface of both side sections of the lower section of the upholstering material (26), which supports the vicinity of the waist of the seated person.
