The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the optical characterisation of a three-dimensional surface. The method and apparatus are an improvement over the known photogoniometer and Parousiameter, as it enables a more reliable characterisation of three-dimensionally shaped surfaces. The technique is particularly useful for the characterisation of surfaces with a complex optical appearance such as the human skin.
