PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent deterioration in image quality caused by foreign matter on a photoreceptor by sufficiently removing foreign matter which is discharged from a cleaning device when replacing blades and attached to an image carrier. SOLUTION: After the blades are replaced, the image carrier is moved in a direction opposite from a direction in which the image carrier is moved when forming an image, the foreign matter on the image carrier is moved to an upstream side of the cleaning blade and then the image carrier is moved in the direction in which the image carrier is moved when forming the image. thereby the foreign matter is removed.
