PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming method and apparatus with which, even if scratches are produced due to foreign matter or the like on an image carrier carrying a toner image having the highest spectral reflectance in light wavelength 550 nm, it is difficult for human eyes to distinguish the toner image itself, consequently, the image is prevented from being recognized as a defective image. SOLUTION: When removing residual toner remaining on a transfer belt 8 or an intermediate transfer belt 8a, a bias voltage having a reverse polarity is applied to at least one of transfer rollers 9Y to 9B, and a velocity difference is given between the circumferential velocity of a photoreceptor drum 4Y carrying the toner image having the highest spectral reflectance in light wavelength 550 nm and the moving velocity of the transfer belt 8 or the intermediate transfer belt 8a.
