<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which has at least one or at least two characteristics selected from among a wide temperature range of a nematic phase, a low viscosity, a suitable optical anisotropy, a large dielectric anisotropy, a large elastic constant ratio, a small temperature dependence of threshold voltage, a small frequency dependence of a dielectric anisotropy, a short helical pitch, etc.; and to provide an STN device which has such characteristics including a short response time, a large contrast ratio, a low threshold voltage, a small power consumption, a precipitous voltage-transmittance curve, a small light leakage, etc. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition includes an optically-active compound illustrated by formula as the first component and a specific compound having a positively large dielectric anisotropy as the second component. The composition may further include a specific compound having a high upper limit temperature or a low viscosity as the third component and a specific compound having a positively large dielectric anisotropy as the fourth component.
