Provided are pattern-forming objects which (1) retain the shape thereof until application and (2) easily collapse during application and which (3) can be easily and inexpensively produced. The pattern-forming objects for incorporation into coating material compositions comprise a plurality of pattern-forming objects formed through gelation with agar. The pattern-forming objects may comprise pattern-forming objects differing in color, or may include pattern-forming objects containing a pigment or colorant, or may comprise pattern-forming objects at least some of which contain a powdery or particulate aggregate.
