An apparatus for making thermoplastic polymeric films, such as polyethylene or polypropylene, having desired optical and physical properties, comprises: a tank 17 containing quenching liquid 15, a pair of baffles 33 positioned within the tank in spaced apart relationship for suppressing turbulence within that portion of the quenching liquid between the baffles, an extruder 11 for continuously extruding a generally flat stream of molten polymeric material 13 into the tank between the baffles, means including separate openings 45 along each of the baffles, the openings communicating with containers 43 from where quenching liquid from between the opposing faces of the baffles is discharged by pipe 49, and a pipe 51 removed from the baffles for delivering quenching liquid to the tank. The opposing walls of the baffles preferably have vertically extending serrations of sawtooth configuration and the containers are preferably supported for both horizontal and vertical adjustment relative to the tank by guide plates 55, which are formed with horizontal and vertical projections 57 and 59 received in correspondingly shaped slots 61, formed in the outside surface of the container, and 63 formed along the inside surface of the tank walls. Thumb screws 65 and 67 look the containers in their adjusted positions. The solidified film is removed from the tank by means of rolls 27, 21 and 23. |
