[Also in Division B7] A bearing assembly between a shaft 11 and a housing 10 comprises a shaft having an end 15 disposed in a hollow portion of the housing, a first bearing means 25 supporting the end 23 of the shaft in the housing and a second bearing means 28 disposed in the housing but radially spaced from the shaft, the first bearing means being resiliently deformable under heavy loading to permit the second bearing means to support the shaft during the duration of the heavy loading. As shown, the shaft 11 is a kingpin secured in one end of an axle 13 by a tapered pin 14 and supported by a yoke 21 and integral wheel spindle 22 through a thrust bearing 38 and similar upper and lower bearing assemblies 19 and 20. The bearing assembly 19 comprises a closed-ended sleeve 27 which is pressed into the end 17 of the yoke, and contains a plastic bearing 25, which has a split 31 (Fig. 2), to act as a lubricant passage and is pressed by a spring 30 into engagement with the conical end 23 of the kingpin, and a metal bearing 28 engageable, on deformation of the plastic bearing, with a cylindrical portion of the kingpin. The closed end of the sleeve 27 includes a plug 33 which is removable to lubricate the bearings or to facilitate the removal of the sleeve from the yoke or the yoke from the axle. In alternative bearing assemblies (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), the bearings 25 and 28 are mounted directly in the yoke and the sleeve forms the second bearing respectively. |
