PURPOSE: A control apparatus and method for generating and using a 3D surge map for control of a cooling device are provided to improve energy efficiency of a cooling device, avoiding surge conditions. CONSTITUTION: A control apparatus for generating and using a 3D surge map for control of a cooling device comprises an electronic processing unit which detects a plurality of surge events and calculates points of the detected surge events in a 3D coordinate system that describe at least three conditions of the cooling device(14). The electronic processing unit produces a surface map about a 3D coordinate system using the calculated points and controls at least one set point of the cooling device using the surface map. The control apparatus is coupled to an electronic display system to display the rendering of the surface map.
