A regeneratively heated coke oven battery fired by rich gas through ports 74, Fig. 6, comprises ovens 14 alternating with heating walls 15 formed by hair-pin flues, regenerator partition walls 24 below the heating walls, and regenerators 23 below the ovens divided longitudinally at 31 and transversely at 34 by the chequers themselves and served by sole flues 35, 36. Each chequer 25, Fig. 7, is formed with vertical passages 30 and in juxta-position to neighbouring chequers forms the walls 31 and 34 defining regenerator compartments 33, one to each heating flue. Ducts 45, 45<SP>1</SP> lead from compartments 33 to oblong ports 46 and risers 52 in the flues, and the risers may be of variable height in alternate flues, Fig. 6. The widths of ports 46 are graduated from the pusher side to the coke side of the battery to take into account oven taper, and slider bricks 55 are provided to control the riser orifices. Each sole flue 35, 36 communicates with a regenerator 23 through a replaceable stainless steel plate 44 having ports graduated to supply the largest amount of air to compartments 33 contiguous with the sides of the battery and progressively more air to the respective interior compartments from the pusher to the coke side of the battery. The plates 44 are made in sections individual to each compartment 33 and joined end to end for ease of replacement. |
