The device (10) has a housing (12) comprising a coin accommodator (16) in connection with a coin storage for unsorted accommodation of coins from the coin storage. A dispensing opening dispenses the coins, and another dispensing opening (50) supplies the coins to a collecting container. A detection device detects type of the coins fed to a detection channel (34). A controller controls a set of deflection devices (40, 44) so that the coins fed through the channel are selectively conveyed through one of the openings or conveyed backwardly in an endless conveyor (18). An independent claim is also included for a method for dispensing coins.
