An oxidation catalyst comprises CoMoO4 and a minor proportion of one or more of the molybdates of Mn, Cr, Cd, Sn, Sb, U, Al, Th or Zr. The minor proportion may be between 0,01 and 20 moles per cent based on the CoMoO4. The catalyst may be prepared by coprecipitation of mixed molybdates from aqueous solutions containing Co and another salt, the molybdate of which it is desired to precipitate. The molar ratio Co/Mo is preferably not greater than 1/1 . The catalyst may be supported e.g. an Al2O3. A preferred oxidation catalyst consists of CoMoO4 to which has been added a mixture of manganese and cadmium molybdates. The CoMoO4 may be prepared in the presence of a nitrogeneous base and subsequently subjected to a two stage heat treatment as described in Specification 878,802. Examples are given. |
