<PICT:0885477/III/1> A solid and a liquid are reacted by forming a bed of said solids in the form of a ring which is driven round the walls of the reactor by means of rapidly rotating beaters after the manner defined in Specification 880,183 to simulate a fluidized bed and adding said liquid at a rate insufficient to cause collapse of said bed. As shown in the Figure, reactors a1, a2 and a3 are provided with beaters b1, b2, b3 and c1, c2 and c3 supported on shafts d1, d2 and d3. These shafts may be driven by means of Diesel or other internal combustion engines, the exhaust gases from which may be used to heat steam or heat transfer liquids such as diphenyl which may circulate in heating jackets surrounding the reactors. Exemplified reactions are production of (1) Al2(SO4)3 from clay and H2SO4 at 140-220 DEG C. (Li, Be, Ti, Zn, Ni, Cu and Pb sulphates may be similarly produced respectively from lithium and beryllium silicate, ilmenite and ores of the other metals), (2) SO2 by adding H2SO4 sludge from oil refineries, preheated to 170 DEG C. to a bed of coke at 220 DEG C., (3) KH2PO4 by reaction of KCl and H3PO4, (4) HF by reaction of fluor spar and H2SO4 at 180-220 DEG C. |
