PURPOSE: An obstacle recognition system for vehicles and a method thereof are provided to obtain the exact information since the resolution of image data is not lowered by transmitting the obstacle information to a controller. CONSTITUTION: An obstacle recognition system for vehicles comprises an intelligent camera unit and a control unit(120). The intelligent camera unit comprises a photographing unit, infrared image unit, lens image unit, and pretreatment unit. The photographing unit photographs the peripheral status of vehicles. The infrared image unit obtains infrared image when the illumination of the photographed image is lower than the reference illumination. The lens image unit obtains the lens image when the illumination of the photographed image is higher than the reference illumination. The pretreatment unit compensates the noise and distortion of existing in the infrared image and lens image.
