PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus for achieving image processing by referring to peripheral pixels of a pixel of interest while reducing the amount of data of an overlap region, and a method of controlling the image processing apparatus. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus is configured to extract the pixel data of a second region excluding an overlapped first region and the prescribed pixel data of each small block obtained by dividing the first region from each of a plurality of blocks (S6), and to define the pixel data of the block among the extracted pixel data as the pixel of interest and the pixel of interest and the peripheral pixels of the pixel of interest as the object of image processing, and to, when the peripheral pixels are positioned in the first region, perform image processing by defining the prescribed pixel data of the small block in which the peripheral pixels are positioned as the object of image processing (S7).
