PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control unit for automatic transmission improved in the convenience of a manual mode. SOLUTION: A maximum acceleration G1 which is obtained when shift stage is switched to low side is set based on a vehicle speed V1. A first setting ratioαis set based on an accelerator opening or the like. When a first down shift operation is performed, the maximum acceleration G1 and the first setting ratioαare multiplied, and Gra1 is set as a requested acceleration Gr. A fourth speed shift stage is set as a requested shift stage where a vehicle acceleration closest to the requested acceleration Gra1 is obtained (reference sign Sa1). Since the current shift stage is the seventh speed (reference sign Sa0), the fourth speed of the requested shift stage is set as a target shift stage as it is, and down shift is performed from the seventh speed to the fourth speed by skipping two stages. Since the target shift stage is set based on the requested acceleration in this way, an appropriate vehicle acceleration can be obtained, and the frequency of shift operations can be reduced.
