The method involves filling an operating chamber (20) with fresh charge, and compressing the fresh charge provided in the operating chamber by a movable piston (12) under volume decrease of the operating chamber and overthrusting of the compressed fresh charge into inlet pressure chambers (28, 30). The partially combusted charge withdrawing from one of the inlet pressure chambers is expanded under volume increase of the operating chamber and operating delivery of the piston. The combusted fresh charge is discharged from the operating chamber. An independent claim is also included for a piston-type internal combustion engine.
