PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact optical scanner with an overfill optical system which receives a stable and large light quantity laser beam and to provide an image forming apparatus equipped with the optical scanner. SOLUTION: The optical scanner includes: a laser diode 91 which emits laser beam; a polygon mirror 96 which reflects/deflects the laser beam from the laser diode 91 on a reflection face; a plurality of lenses 92, 94, 202 and 203; a gradation filter 208; a plurality of mirrors 95, 206 for emitting the laser beam deflected with the polygon mirror 96; and a BD sensor 209 which detects the laser beam reflected with the polygon mirror 96 and outputs a horizontal synchronization signal. The laser diode 91 and the BD sensor 209 are disposed at outside of the region in which the laser beam scans the photoreceptor drum 30, and the BD sensor is disposed on the side on which the laser beam is made incident on the polygon mirror 96.
