PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a Mach-Zehnder interference type optical modulator, by which a high quenching rate and a high Q value are provided. SOLUTION: The method for driving the Mach-Zehnder interference type optical modulator 10 is characterized in that when first and second modulated signals have, respectively, first times Toff1, Toff2 when voltages thereof are at the first level, first transition times Tr1, Tr2 when the transitions of the voltages thereof are performed from the first level to the second level, second times Ton1, Ton2 when the voltages thereof are at the second level and second transition times Tf1, Tf2 when the transitions of the voltages thereof are performed from the second level to the first level, Tr1 and Tr2 are superposed on each other on the time base, Tf1 and Tf2 are also superposed on each other on the time base, output light is turned ON when the voltages of the first and second modulated signals are at the second level, the second amplitude being a voltage difference of the second modulated signal between the first level and the second level is made smaller than the first amplitude being the voltage difference of the first modulated signal between the first level and the second level, Tr2<Tr1, Tf2<Tf1, and Toff2 satisfies Toff1+(Tr1-Tr2)+(Tf1-Tf2)≥Toff2>Toff1+(Tr1-Tr2)×0.5+(Tf1-Tf2)×0.5.
