PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which can significantly reduce quantity of flake waste occurring in an alignment film without reducing the size of column spacers or pedestals. SOLUTION: On the surface of the liquid crystal side of a second substrate, a plurality of column spacers, which are disposed to be scattered, and the second alignment film coating these column spacers are formed. On the surface of the liquid crystal side of a first substrate, pedestals, which are disposed in the positions facing the column spacers, and a first alignment film coating these pedestals are formed. The diameter of the column spacers is larger than the diameter or width of the pedestals, and recess parts having the diameter or width smaller than the diameter or width of the pedestals are formed on the top faces of the column spacers.
