PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for manufacturing an organic EL element which reduces short circuits caused by foreign matters or the like, to provide an organic EL element, and to provide a display device for the element. SOLUTION: The organic EL element includes: a substrate 11 having a first electrode 14, an organic layer 16 containing a light-emitting layer, a second electrode 17, and a resistance layer 18 in order; a disconnected part 51 formed under a reversed tapered side face 53A of the foreign matters or the like 53 about the resistance layer 18, the second electrode 17, and the organic layer 16; an embedded layer made of an insulating material such as silicon nitride formed on the resistance layer 18; an embedded part 52, consisting of an insulating material, arranged on the disconnected part 51 after anisotropically etching and removing the embedded layer except the disconnected part 51; and a third electrode 19 on the resistance layer 18 and the embedded part 52. In this structure, contacting the first electrode 14 to the third electrode 19 through the disconnected part 51 prevents short circuiting. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
