PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable area, vane-type diffuser suitable for use in a compressed air system for an air conditioning pack. SOLUTION: The diffuser 22 includes a plurality of vanes 38 rotatable about pivot pins 54 between a plurality of positions. A mounting plate 30 supports a backing plate 28. The vanes 38 are arranged between the backing plate 28 and a shroud 36. The pivot pins 54 are in a slip fit relationship with the backing plate 28, vanes 38 and shroud 36 and are threadingly inserted in bosses 42 of the mounting plate 30. The construction of the mounting plate 30 and the pivot pins 54 allows the backing plate 28 and the shroud 36 to remain parallel with one another while the backing plate 28 and/or the shroud 36 is subjected to deflection. A structure, such as integral protrusions 46 and/or bolts 40, extends from the backing plate 28 and the shroud 36 through apertures 44 to the vanes 38 to better contain the vanes 38 when a sudden failure occurs.
