Provided is a communication system which makes it possible to readily align not only the position of an infrared communication unit but also the orientation of the infrared communication unit when the directivity of infrared communication is narrow. A mobile terminal (201) is provided with magnetism detectors (203-1, 203-2) for detecting the intensity of magnetism generated by a communication device (101), and an attitude detector (204) for detecting the attitude of the mobile terminal (201). The magnetism detectors (203-1, 203-2) detect intensity of magnetism and the user is notified of the distance between the magnetism detectors (203-1, 203-2) and the communication device (101) such that infrared communication is enabled. Furthermore, on the basis of the terminal attitude information detected by the attitude detector (204), the user is notified by a notification unit (206) as to which direction the mobile terminal (201) should be facing in order to align the orientations of the optical axes of the infrared communication units of the mobile terminal (201) and the communication device (101).
