<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device having an inverter which responds to fixing of drive frequency and surely lights up a lamp and also to provide a liquid crystal device using the lighting device. <P>SOLUTION: In the lighting device including a resonance load circuit having a hot-cathode fluorescent lamp (101) and a first resonant capacitor (109), the inverter having at least one set of upper and lower arms which are a serial body of two switching elements and supplying AC current to the resonance load circuit, and a control device for controlling the inverter, the inverter has a serial body of a second resonant capacitor (119) and auxiliary switching elements (120, 121). The control device controls ON time duty of the auxiliary switching element so as to make ramp voltage of the hot-cathode fluorescent lamp higher than discharge voltage at the time of lighting the hot-cathode fluorescent lamp.
