A method and a fluid composition for protecting organs and cells susceptible to preservation and hypothermia injury. The method comprises contacting the organs and cells with a blood-free preservation solution containing propofol. The organ may be flushed or perfused with a propofol-containing solution through its vasculature in situ. After procurement, organs may be continuously perfused or alternatively, maintained in cold after initial flushing; tissues and cells are immersed in a solution containing propofol for preservation. The invention provides for improved protection against preservation and hypothermia injury when compared with the use of protective substances described in the prior art. |
