[Also in Division B3] A thermoplastic element 10, 12, 14, 16 or 17, e.g. of nylon, is bonded to the surface of a fastener, e.g. a nut, bolt or dowel, by an adhesive film comprising a cured blend of thermosetting resin, e.g. epoxy resin, and a thermoplastic resin, e.g. nylon, that can crosslink with the thermosetting resin during curing. A curing agent, e.g. dicyandiamide, can be incorporated into the adhesive. The element is joined to the fastener by first forming a plastic laminate of the element and the adhesive films without curing the thermosetting resin of the films. The laminate is then heated to a temperature above the melting point of the element, and sufficient pressure is applied to cause the laminate into intimate contact with the fastener. Thereafter the laminate is held at a temperature below the melting point of the element to cure the adhesive film. |
