<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device enabling adjustment of the width of an area from which an existing coating is removed to a desired size. <P>SOLUTION: A layer is removed in a part, particularly a peripheral zone (11), of a substrate (4) including a coating, especially a metal-containing coating, with the aid of plasma directed onto the coated face of the substrate (4). With the plasma head (10) being aligned with the substrate (4) and/or a corresponding and required number of plasma heads (10) being operated, the width of the zone (11) from which a layer is removed can be adjusted by directing plasma onto the substrate at the desired layer-removing width from a row of several plasma heads (10) disposed adjacent to one another or one plasma head having a modifiable cross section.
