PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus configured to decrease the size of a toner container, decrease deterioration of an intermediate transfer body by resulting from removal of residual toner, and maintain satisfactory image quality, in the image forming apparatus employing an intermediate transfer system. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a photoreceptor drum 4; an exposure device 42; a developing device 43; a transfer roller 11 for primarily transferring a toner image to an intermediate transfer belt 1; a cleaning member 3 disposed in contact with the intermediate transfer belt 1, to remove residual toner after secondary transfer; and a waste-toner container 33 storing residual toner. In the image forming apparatus, when the previous image and the subsequent image are different from each other in at least one of an image pattern and image color tone, the cleaning member 3 removes residual toner, and when the previous image and the subsequent image are the same as each other in the image pattern and image color tone, a toner image for the subsequent image is secondarily transferred onto residual toner.
