PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve gear of an internal combustion engine which can promptly learn a control range of a variable control member without causing mechanical trouble. SOLUTION: When the internal combustion engine is in an operating state (S02), a position at a predetermined proximate distance from a regulation member is set to a control target position with reference to a minimum value of a control range of a variable control member up to the present (S03). After an actuator is operated at a first speed or higher so as to force an operating position of a variable control member to be the position at a predetermined proximate distance (S04), the actuator is operated at a speed not higher than a second speed which is lower than the first speed until the variable control member is determined to reach the position of the regulation member (S05, S06). When the variable control member is determined to reach the position of the regulation member, an operating position detected by a variable operating position detection means is learned as the minimum value of a new control range of the variable control member (S07-S10).
