An electronic device, method and graphical user interface provide a plurality of user interface areas, including at least one navigation bar, a button field and a message window. The at least one navigation bar contains a plurality of fixed user interface elements corresponding to different language categories for selection by a user. The button field contains a plurality of language elements populated based on which fixed user interface element within the navigation bar was selected by a user. The message window enables a user to compose a message from selected language elements within the button field, some or all of which may be downloaded from a server computer over a network to which the electronic device is coupled. The language elements contained within the message window are then sent to a text-to-speech engine to generate audio output.
