The invention relates to a device for detecting the joining temperature during the laser beam welding of thermoplastics. The device includes a laser machining head, a pyrometer (2) and imaging optics (3, 7) that images an area occupied by the laser spot in the joining plane (11) onto the detection plane of the pyrometer (2). The imaging optics (3, 7) is selected such that the image (10) of the area occupied by the laser spot in the joining plane (11) is greater in the detection plane than the detection area (9) of the pyrometer (2). The device can be used to reliably detect the temperature during the joining process, such that said measurement can be used for process control.
