The object is guided over multiple flexible elements (1a-1d) e.g. ropes and belts. The flexible elements are clampable and/or pressed against each other. The retaining structure comprises retaining elements (2a-2d) that are movable completely independent of one another and relative to each other in two degrees of freedom (x, y) of translation. The object is displaceable using drive elements by realizing change in length, position and/or orientation of the flexible elements in its position and/or orientation relative to the retaining structure.
