The system has two electric motors, and an inverter (30) for controlling one of the electric motors for producing variable speed and/or variable torque. A variable transmission i.e. planetary gear (40), has input shafts (41, 42) that are coupled with the electric motors, and an output shaft (43) that is coupled with a component to be driven. The electric motors are formed as synchronous motors i.e. permanent magnet-excited synchronous motors (10, 20). A speed adjustment transmission (60) is coupled with the output shaft of the variable transmission.
