PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent unkneaded matters from remaining and defective kneading from occurring, in a refractory kneader using a stirring means with spiral blades and in a method for kneading a monolithic refractory. SOLUTION: In the refractory kneader which includes the stirring means in which spiral blades are arranged on the peripheral surface of a rotary shaft, and kneads the monolithic refractory using the stirring means that rotates with the rotary shaft as the rotary axis, the ratio of the blade width to the helical pitch of the blade is made ≥0.25 and ≤0.65, and the ratio of the blade width to a distance from the peripheral surface of the rotary shaft in a cross section vertical to the direction of the rotary axis to the inner wall face of the container of the refractory kneader is made ≥0.25 and ≤0.48.
