PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure soundness of an engine by earlier determining a foretaste of overheat. SOLUTION: This over heat control device 58 for an engine has: a thermostat 52 provided in a cooling water passage leading cooling water to each part of an engine so as to be opened when the cooling water temperature reaches the thermostat set temperature; and a control unit 42 for regulating a rise of engine speed when the engine temperature detected by the temperature sensor 54 and the temperature inclination thereof exceed an overheat determination values. The thermostat 52 has one specification among a plurality of specification different from each other in the thermostat set temperature. The control unit 42 has: a thermostat specification determining section 56 for determining specification of the thermostat 52 provided in the engine based on a tendency of temperature rise detected by the temperature sensor 54 after starting the engine; and an overheat determination value setting section 57 for setting an overheat determination value, based on the determined specification.
