A machine for winding coils on a stationary form comprises a spindle rotating about its longitudinal axis and mounting one part of the stationary form so that it can remain stationary as the spindle rotates, a second part of the coil form movable along the longitudinal axis to and from the first part or vice-versa, said two parts having engageable and mating elements which, when the parts are in contact, provide a rigid and rotationally stationary winding form, an arm mounted on and rotating with said spindle to wind wire on the form, and means for causing longitudinal reciprocation of the arm or winding form. A turret 15 carrying a coil former portion 31, provided with jaw like members 62, 63, is moved towards a spindle 13 carrying a coil former portion 30, having a wedge 45, so that the two portions interlock to form a rigid stationary coil former, bearings 41 allowing rotation of the spindle 13. Alternatively the portion 30 may be moved towards the portion 31. The turret 15 could alternatively carry the wedge 45 and the spindle 13 the jaws 62, 63. Wire 86 held at one end between jaws 80, 81 of a member 16 is wound on the former by a flyer 17 rotating with the spindle 13 and reciprocated longitudinally thereof by cam means 14, 37. Alternatively the flyer could be longitudinally stationary and the turret traverse for wire laying. The first turn is guided by a groove 75 in the portion 31. After the required number of turns have been wound a retainer pin 76 is moved forward through the portion 31 to engage a flange 55 on the portion 30, the lower jaw 80 of the member 16 then moves forward to catch the wire 87 extending from the coil to the flyer over a pulley 84 on the jaw 80 which jaw then moves back to bring the wire to the jaw 81. The jaw 81 moves down to clamp the wire and a cutter 85 severs it. The turret 15 is then retracted to withdraw the completed coil and rotated so that the coil may be removed, the turret being provided with two former portions 31. The turns of the coil may be held in place after winding by tape on the former.
