PURPOSE: An apparatus for automatically welding exterior joints of steel pipes and an automatic welding method using the apparatus are provided to reduce the radius of rotation of the whole welding system through automatic welding using an intelligent robot. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for automatically welding exterior joints of steel pipes comprises a gripping device(210), a rail(240), and a multi-joint automatic welding robot(250). The gripping device has a circular structure when closed to be installed on the exterior of steel pipes. The rail is projected in a cylindrical shape on one side of the gripping device. The multi-joint automatic welding robot comprises robot arms having a multi-joint structure and moves along the rail around the steel pipes to automatically weld exterior joints of the steel pipes.
