In a freewheel clutch, sprags 3, engaging between inner and outer cylindrical races 1, 2, are separated by spacers 5, e.g. of sintered metal, cast or moulded integral with a cage ring (6), Fig. 1a (not shown), and fixed, e.g. riveted, at their opposite end in a cover ring (10),. each spacer including a pair of cylindrical bearing surfaces 5<SP>1</SP> to guide cylindrical surfaces 4 on each sprag, the cage ring (6) being formed with recesses 8 receiving torsion coil springs 9, one arm 9a of each spring being held fixed in the recess, and the other arm 9b, which is bent to engage in a groove in the sprag 3, is movable in a slot in the recess, the sides of which provide stops corresponding to the maximum angle of tilt of the sprags. When the clutch is suddenly released, excessive tilt of the sprags against the action of springs 9 causes the spring arms 9b to slide along the groove side wall. Again, Fig. 2 (not shown), every second or third sprag may be replaced by a bearing roller (13), and the cage ring (6) and spacers 5 may be moulded of plastics. The cover ring (10) may also be of plastics and the spacers 5 glued thereto. Further, Figs. 3, 4, (not shown), the sprags may be larger and of a different shape. |
