[Also in Division F2] In a motor vehicle transmission comprising a manually operated gear-box and a clutch interposed between the engine and the gear-box, a retarder, which may be electric or hydraulic and may develop a constant torque, is interposed between the clutch and the gear-box and means are provided for automatically cancelling out the braking torque of the retarder when the gearshift lever is passed through neutral. In Fig. 2, an eddy current type retarder 6, interposed between the clutch 2 and gear-box 3, is in series with a switch 12 and a control device 14. As the gearshift lever 13 passes through neutral, the switch 12 is opened. In Fig. 3, the arrangement comprises an engine 1, clutch 2, hydraulic retarder 6 and gear-box 3. The hydraulic retarder 6 is a pump circulating water through a radiator 8, which may be the engine radiator cooled by a fan 7, through a flow restricting orifice 20. The flow through the orifice 20 may be short-circuited by a valve 22 operated electrically by closure of a switch 26 when the gear shift lever passes through neutral. The orifice 20 may have a controllable aperture, or a pair of orifices in parallel, one having a fixed and the other a controllable aperture may be provided.</p> |
