A coated paper is produced by applying to a paper base sheet, e.g. rough, soaky and mottled paper rawstock at the wet end of a paper machine, as a base coat, an aqueous pigmented coating composition containing adhesive and pigment having an average spherical size not substantially smaller than 2 microns average spherical diameter. The coating composition may contain at least about 15% by wt. pigments having a particle size in excess of 2 microns average spherical diameter. The coated paper may then be dried and a second coating composition comprising essentially adhesive and pigment having an average particle size less than 2 microns average spherical diameter applied thereto, followed by drying. The coating may be applied by passing the paper base through a blade or roll coating means. The coating compositions may include coarse and fine pigments with the coarse pigments, having a particle size of 2 microns and greater average spherical diameter, comprising at least about 15% by wt. of the total dry solids content of the composition. Coarse pigments specified are calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, clays, solka floc, ground polyethylene and dry starch.
