[Also in Division G4] The position of a workpiece relative to a tool is measured by a capacitive transducer comprising a movable electrode 22 (Fig. 1) and a series of fixed electrodes 21 at successively increasing A. C. potentials. The pick-up potential on electrode 22 is compared with a reference potential, e.g. on slide 30, and the potential difference is used to energize a motor 33 to locate the movable electrode 22 and its associated movable machine part at a position determined by the reference potential at 30. The Specification includes a number of methods for producing the reference and the electrode potentials, with coarse and fine adjustment facilities, and means for modifying the potentials on the fixed electrodes to produce any desired relationship between displacement and potential of the movable electrode. |
