A copolymer of an isoolefin and a conjugated diolefin is ozonized in the presence of a pyridine to cleave the polymer at its internal double bonds and provide polymer fractions of lower molecular weight having carboxylic peracidic, carboxylic acidic, aldehydic and other partially oxidized functionality; the polymer is then treated to convert all carboxylic peracid groups to acid groups and all the partially oxidized groups to aldehyde groups, the polymer is then treated with more ozone or oxygen to convert all the aldehyde groups to carboxylic acid and peracid groups, and finally all the carboxylic peracid groups are reduced to acid groups to produce a polymer having a carboxylic functionality greater than 2. |
