[Also in Divisions G2-G3] 1 - Hydroxy - 2 - naphthamide photographic colour couplers are of formula (in which R is a C 8-18 non-cyclic hydrocarbon or optionally substituted aryl group; A is C 1-3 non-cyclic hydrocarbon, and X is H or halogen). The examples describe the preparation of couplers in which R is C 12 , C 14 or C 16 alkyl, or o-dodecyloxyphenyl, X is H or Cl and A is -(CH 2 ) n - (in which n is 1-3), by reacting 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid phenyl ester or its 4-chloro derivative with a nitrile of formula RNH(CH 2 ) n CN which is prepared by reacting RNH 2 with acrylonitrile (when n is 2), glyceronitrile (when n is 1) or γ-bromobutyronitrile (when n is 3). |
